Microsorum Pteropus:  This popular java fern is both adaptable and simple to care for.

Asia's Microsorum pteropus is a 15- to 30-centimeter-tall water fern to be grown on a stone or root using a fishing line until it takes hold.

Covering the rhizome will cause it to rot, so plant it in the bottom.

Simple to spread by parting the flat rhizome. a robust plant that thrives in all environments. Contrary to popular belief, sporangia—reproductive organs—are the cause of the black spots beneath the leaves.

One of the best aquarium plants for beginners is the Microsorm pteropus, also known as Java Fern. It is also a favorite among more seasoned hobbyists, especially those who like the "Nature Aquarium" style. Java fern is very adaptable.

It can grow happily in "fish tanks" with very little light and no CO₂, but it can also grow well in much more light with more CO₂, as long as the water is clean. Otherwise, it can become infested with algae in high light, just like other slow-growing plants.) It is also one of the few plants that can be used successfully with many Rift Lake cichlid species.

Java ferns can rot if the roots are buried in the substrate, so it is critical to secure them to something solid like wood or rock. In the aquarium, the plant reproduces easily via rhizome and plantlets on the tips of older leaves.

Care Tips:

  • One of the best plants for a low-light aquarium.
  • Change 10 % to 25% of your aquarium water every two weeks to prevent excessive accumulation of nutrients and fish waste.
