Salvinia cucullata – Attractive floater from Tropical Asia
This plant has a leaf-shaped look with a hood, which is rarely available.
The plant called as “Asian water moss” is a very impressive floating fern species from Tropical Asia, which basically occurs in sunny still waters. Salvinia is hardly available in the market, and it is not so popular among the aquariums.
Growth conditions:
- Needs a lot of light
- Needs high temperature above 20°C
- Needs nutrient-rich water
Salvinia gives an interesting look with the hood and rolled leaves. With the help of its side branches, it forms a comb-like look.
They thrive under suboptimal conditions with about a centimeter-long flat leaves set with hair to provide the plant a wonderful look, which has a pale bluish-green tone.
Floating plants look especially good in open tanks. The leaves of Salvinia cucullata block sunlight from reaching very far underwater. This is helpful to many freshwater fish, providing safe hiding places to breed in. They can unfortunately interrupt the photosynthesis of many underwater plants.
